What’s The Difference Between L1 and L2 EV Chargers?

EV chargers are categorized on how much energy they can provide in a given amount of time. The higher the output from the charger, the faster the car will charge.

L1 Charger

The L1 charger can be found in many homes. This charger plugs into a standard 120 volt AC outlet, but they charge your vehicle rather slowly. With a power output of 1.3kW to 2.3 kW, an L1 charger could take up to 24 hours to fully charge your vehicle.

L2 Charger

L2 chargers can output anywhere from 3kW to 19 kW of power, usually recharging your vehicle in less than eight hours. Whereas using the L1 charger overnight may only recharge your car partially, an L2 is sure to speed up that process and have your vehicle ready every day.

Do L2 Chargers Increase Your Electric Bill?

Just because the L2 charger can output more electricity doesn’t mean the expense will be more. An average central AC that runs for about 6 hours uses the same amount of energy as your EV charger will to fully charge your car!

Can You Install An EV Charger Yourself?

For most L1 chargers, you can easily plug in the charger or mount it as needed. However, you may want to double-check with an electrician to make sure you have safe access to electricity. An L2 charger should be installed by a trusted electrician to make sure your existing electrical grid does not need to be updated.
